The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is one of the most highly anticipated sports cars of the year. General Motors is still taking its sweet time getting the car pushed into production, leaving very few folks with the chance to experience the car at this point. Luckily for the Corvette faithful, YouTuber Speed Phenom was just invited to ride along for a few passenger laps in the new Z06 around WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
The C8 Corvette Z06 is the most extreme variant of the nameplate we’ve seen yet, taking an entirely different approach from its C7 generation predecessor. Gone is the blown version of GM’s small block V-8, as the C8 Z06 adopts an all-new 5.5-liter twin-overhead cam flat-plane V-8 known as the LT6. Derived from the racing motor nestled inside the Corvette Racing C8.R, the LT6 is the most powerful naturally-aspirated V-8 ever strapped to a production car. It makes more power still than that Koenigsegg V-8 intended for Spyker, if that rings a bell. With 670 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque on tap, Z06's engine is capable of spinning all the way to an 8600 rpm redline.
